Study claiming Internet Explorer users are dumb was a hoax

A study that made rounds on blogs and renown newspaper websites claiming that Internet Explorer users are dumber than those of other browsers was just an elaborate hoax.

BBC News uncovered the truth about the con, which many publications fell for — CNN; The Daily Mail; The Telegraph; Forbes; and even BBC itself, reported by alleged Canadian firm ApTiquant. It turns out that the faux-company’s website was only recently published and images displayed on it were from a real business in France.

The press release issued by ApTiquant stated that out of 100,000 users, those who used Internet Explorer generally had a lower IQ than those who did not.

While the study was bogus but made headlines, it is unclear who was behind such an elaborate scheme.
